Good music AND science schools in Israel or Australia
on: February 24, 2005, 12:59:22 PM
Greetings,

I'm looking at my options for studying abroad, and I've narrawed the nation list down to Israel or Australia. I'm double majoring in piano and chemistry, so I'd like to study at a school which offers at least relatively strong programs in both. I really know nothing about schools in Israel, and know only one or two in Australia, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Motrax  :)

try anchorage or fairbanks, alaska.  i used to live there.  it IS cold, but the university has great teachers (from all around the world).  it's a great place for a lot of engineers/scientists/and musicians.  of course, the warmer climates are nice, too, but how much study can you do with beaches nearby?
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

Hi not really sure but as noone else has given much you could try the Rubin academy (israel) i think its linked to a university. Also there is the University of Tel Aviv which i believe is linked to a good music department but i haven't gone into the details. Hope starts you off anyway ::)

hmmm i dunno about any degrees in oz that you could do both chemi and music in, possibly because i never looked into such a thing. however i may still have a book on all the uni courses somewhere and i could have a look. that's mainly for NSW though. i think if you were going to attempt to do both at UNSW at least you could do a Bmus/BA and then major in chemistry in the arts half, actually no i don't think you can major in chemistry. well that's a boo, but on the musical side of UNSW i think it's bril, though i am incredibly biased.
but out of that i'll go have a quiz at our lovely unis for you :)

Since tash and I both attend UNSW (University of New South Wales, located in Sydney),  you might find the advice a little biased.   :)

tash, at UNSW, if you want to do both Chemistry and Piano, you could do BSc/BA, majoring in Chemistry in the Science degree, and Music in the Arts degree.

In Sydney, the other two universities where I would consider such a combination are Sydney University (which runs the Sydney Conservatorium of Music), and the University of Western Sydney.  Apart from the three mentioned, the others don't have much of a music faculty to speak of.

Thank you very much for your replies so far!

I don't plan on getting a full degree in any of these universities - what I had in mind was a semester or two semester exchange, where I still get credit toward my degrees here in America. Do any of you know about the University of Western Australia? I was told (by someone who goes there) that the music school there is pretty good, and the chemistry department is great.

Unfortunately for me, Tel Aviv requires the ability to speak Hebrew at a level which is far above my own abilities, so that's probably not a viability.

More replies would be much appreciated. :)

yeah galonia i had a quick look at the unsw handbook and noticed the BSc, but you don't even need to do the BA cos you can do a minor in half the arts subjects, including music so i thought that was really cool. so motrax if you considered that then you'd be doing the same music course i'm doing, which i think is bril, provided you don't mind not doing any actual piano performance, it's all musicology and musicianship (which suits me fine!). oh plus a performance group so you can do like chamber ensemble or whatever. so the science and music faculties at unsw are pretty good. i have no idea about UWA.
sydney uni, i suppose you'd have to opt for the Bsc/BA, except i'm not sure what the music side of it is like, cos it's not based at the con- my friend considered doing it but thought all the lecturers were weird, and my old school music teacher didn't think it was the greatest.
so that's my patriotic statement for unsw! it's good for international students, since like half the students are from overseas, and i think they do do a lot of exchange programs, so your units would count, you'd have to check with your uni and stuff though i think.

cheers to unsw! hahaha i'm SO biased

I'm about to start my 5th (and last!) year of a BSc (Advanced Maths)/BA at University of Sydney.  So for the science part of course i did mostly maths, although i did a bit of chemistry and could have done more but i hate chem.  from what i here though the chem department is very good.  for arts i've done a russian major and this year doing a music major, with some performance and composition.  the music department here is ok, of course nothing like the conservatorium, which is also part of the uni.  but they've just introduced a new degree BA/BMus, with the arts at sydney uni, and the music at the con, so maybe you could persuade them to let you make it BSc/BMus.  i think i was the first one to do a russian major here, had to take all my classes at Macquarie Uni, so you never know...

actually you don't even really have to actually follow the set plan thingys for the degrees here. well at least i don't think so, we've got a girl from new jersey doing exchange and i think she's basically doing arts but at her uni she did painting as a subject, so she's just picked a mash of subjects that interested her i think, so i guess if you came to unsw you could do that, like just do some chemistry subjects and some music subjects and voila all you need is the right amount of units of credit
