Heller op. 81

Is anyone familiar with the 24 Preludes op. 81 by Stephen Heller?

I've never played one of these preludes (I'm still working on his etudes), but I've got a recording of them - played by Jean Martin. I could upload it if you are interested and don't have it yet...

The file includes preludes op. 150, too (man, that Heller guy wrote a lot of preludes!). Unfortunately the files are only numbered, not named - 01-24 are op 81, the rest is op 150.

You also might be interested in a online book titled "Stephen Heller:  His Life and Works", I believe written in 1876, twelve years b/4 his death.  The author of the book, which by the way is a translation from French to English, discussed Heller's relationship w/ Schumann & other contemporary artisans.  Critiques Heller's works (mostly in flattering terms with many comparisons to Chopin & Mendelssohn.  It's a good read but you need to print it out (60 pages) & then reassemble it.  I'll attach it here.

BTW a lot of these came from https://www.gamingforce.com/forums/concert-hall.  The site is a bit confusing to maneuver around in, but to access Classical stuff you'll want to go to the "Concert Hall" forum & do your search in that forum.

The selected studies are from different opera - I recognized some that I had already learned: No 15, 16 and 24 are from op 45, No 35 (a short Tarantella - great fun to play!) is from op 46! The first 14 or so are from op 47.

Wow!!!  I would love all of these recordings posted.  Although, I already have op. 45,46,47 I'm sure someone else would love to listen to them.  I don't know of any additional recordings but when I find some I'll be sure to post.

I have a slightly different version of op. 85 no. 2 (attached).  Let me know what you think.

BTW what do you normally due with different version of the same piece, I was working on Dvorak's Humoreske & found 3 different versions (95% silmilar), differenceds were in pedalling, some left hand chords and a few notes on the right.  I ended just sticking to one version. 

I'ml also attach a four hand version of op. 85, no. 2.

Heller's great, anybody want to recommend any of his pieces around Grade 3/4.

I have a premium account at rapidshare, that's why I use it to upload files. With premium, there is only a 100MB limit (which doesn't matter as you can split the files with rar, zip or hjsplit), but the speed is very good (1,2 MB/sec) and for the offered service it's very cheap! There are sites with much bigger problems - some delete files very fast (I believe sendspace does that) and megaupload is painfully slow...

Thanks very much for the other version of the Tarantella - it's the best scan quality I've seen up to now! I have the 4hd version, too - maybe I could play it with my teacher as soon as I've learned the 2hd version.

Yeah, differences in the scores are unfortunately quite common. For example Chopin 28/20: I've found 2 versions with a C Major in the 3rd bar and 3 versions with a c minor... Or Scarlatti sonatas contain a lot of these differences. If I find one I simply play the different versions and decide which sounds better to me and stick with it...


For some grade 3/4 pieces: Have a look at some of Heller's studies - they sound great and a lot of them are not that hard. Out of your selected studies you could try No 16 (orig. op 45/2) and No. 35 (orig. op 46/7 - Tarantella. Not easy to bring it up to the suggested speed, but sounds also great when played a little slower).

actually ive had some files on sendspace for a really long time now. i mean, like over a month, and they havent been downloaded since. sorry to complain or whatever, but that 1 hour waiting period is really annoying. well, aside from the upload problems, these heller recordings are really great.

Unfortunately not. I'm looking for some Heller on eBay every now and then, but it's hard to find something besides his studies... And if I'm not mistaken it's equally hard to find his works as new in Score Shops. Maybe there's a chance to find some of his not-so-well-known-scores at an... aeeehhhmmm... it would be 'Antiquariat' in german - don't know the english word - some place where you can buy old books and so on...
