Robert Schumann
Three Fantasies
Op. 111
About Robert Schumann's Three Fantasies
This collection, dating from Schumann’s later years, could be said to reflect his troubled state of mind and his experiences of mental illness.
The stormy opening piece is full of tension, yearning and wailing. The second brings some relief, but even this tender and sweet melody is interrupted by disturbing thoughts. The final piece has a grand and triumphant main theme reminiscent of Schumann´s Davidsbündler pieces and other earlier works.
