Period: Early Romantic
This work was first published in 1843, after Schubert's death, as "Five Piano Pieces". However, in the only extant autograph, Allegro moderato, Schubert wrote "Sonate" on top of the first page of the first piece, and continued in the same manuscript with an incomplete version of the second piece.
It remains unclear whether all 5 movements belong together. From the second edition of the Deutsch catalogue the three last pieces of the set were split off as D 459a, "Three Piano Pieces", with only the two first movements regarded as belonging to the same sonata.
