Franz Schubert
Impromptu
in C Minor, Op. 90 No. 1
This Impromptu spins a richly emotional narrative originating from just one simple theme.
Year: 1827
Period: Early Romantic
Peace wins after long battle
Almost meditative in nature, the C minor Impromptu spins a richly emotional narrative originating from just one simple theme. Technically approachable enough for the late intermediate student to enjoy, it nevertheless demands mastery to keep the narrative together while finding all the colors and subtle inflections hidden within the music. After the almost hypnotically repetitive introductory section, a simple triplet accompaniment takes us on an initially peaceful journey. Increasing tension soon leads to some highly emotional eruptions, finally receding into a quieter ending section, balancing precariously on the edge between C minor and C major. Only at the very end does peace win the battle, ending the Impromptu on a C major chord. Background
The four Impromptus, Op. 90 (D. 899) were probably composed at least in part during the composer's stay in Dornbach in the summer of 1827, just over a year before his death. The first two went to press in late 1827; it wasn't until 1857 that Nos. 3 and 4 appeared in print.Forum posts about this piece:
