Miniature Masterpiece Missed the Prize
The Sonatine grew out of a competition that Ravel entered. He was to compose a short movement, and the first prize for the competition was 100 francs, which seemed like easy money because his was the only entry. He never collected the prize, however, because the piece was supposed to be a certain number of measures, and Ravel went over by a couple and got disqualified! Nevertheless, he completed the other two movements. He was not a good enough pianist to play the third, which is quite challenging, so he only ever really played the first two. The Sonatine features many of Ravel's stylistic trademarks in an exquisitely handled classical form, where a few short motives makes myriad appearances and are transformed throughout all three movements.Forum posts about this piece:
