from Lyric Pieces

Grieg and his Scandinavian collegues - with their abundant experience of long and bleak winters - often evoked the magical emergence of spring. Here's one of the most beautiful examples.

Passionate Feelings of Spring

To Spring starts with a sweet melody that is superimposed upon gently throbbing triplets. Grieg tells the performer to play with passion, which at first seems to belie the bucolic nature of this little piece. But on the second page, the music builds up to a fortissimo climax, and when the melody is repeated, the triplets are moved to the right hand and complemented with agitated arpeggios.

Background

The 66 Lyric Pieces span the whole of Grieg’s compositional career and were published in 10 volumes from 1867 to 1901. Grieg himself called these efforts “an intimate life story”, and they are considered a prime example of the inventiveness and slight wryness that made his keyboard music so enchanting. Several composers, too, have created orchestral arrangements for the Lyric Pieces. Anton Seidl and Grieg himself composed notable arrangements of several of the pieces.
