In 1901 Debussy wrote incidental music to Chansons de Bilitis, a collection of erotic poetry in the manner of Sappho by Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925). About fifteen years later he reworked about half of this music – originally scored for two flutes, two harps, and celesta – first for piano duet, then for piano solo.
