Frédéric Chopin
Nocturne 3
in B Major, Op. 9 No. 3
The third Nocturne combines gentle chromaticism with stormy drama.
Year: 1833
Period: Early Romantic
Quirky, expressive, stormy
The third and final Nocturne of Op. 9 contrasts an odd, almost quirky theme built over chromatic harmony, an expressive and flowing section, and a stormy, dramatic middle part. The form of the piece follows an A-A'-B-B'-C-A''-Coda scheme (C being the stormy middle section), while repeatedly using the same little cadential theme to end each section, tying the different ideas together.
Compared to its two sisters, which are accessible to the intermediate pianist, this Nocturne is more difficult to play. Fioritura figurations in the right hand and rapid accompaniment in the left hand during the middle section all ask for a good command over the fingers and suppleness of the pianist's hand and wrist.
Background
This Nocturne is the last in a set of three written between 1830 and 1832, when Chopin was about twenty years old.Forum posts about this piece:
