At the Cemetery
The final Nocturne of Op. 15 is quite different from its siblings. Abandoning the decorated melodic lines over steadily rolling accompaniment and the clearly delineated middle sections full of drama, it features a simpler, reflective melody over a slowly pulsing, short-long accompaniment pattern. Narrating its tale in free form, the Nocturne explores each of its themes in turn, without returning to them again. Giving in, only for a moment, to an outburst of despair, it transitions into its final section, featuring what seems to be a chorale, perhaps illustrating a small organ playing in a chapel somewhere, alluding to the Nocturne's original title "At the cemetery". Composed a day after Chopin attended a performance of Hamlet, he later erased this title, saying: "Let them figure it out for themselves."Background
The three Nocturnes Op. 15 were written between 1830 and 1833 and published in 1834, when Chopin was in his early twenties. They demonstrate the young composer, already masterful at his craft, making the Nocturne genre more fully his own compared to the earlier, John Field-inspired Nocturnes of Op. 9.Forum posts about this piece:
