A Tender Duet
This final waltz ends the 16 Waltzes Op. 39 on a quiet, melancholic note. A distinct feature is the two melodic lines which gently embrace in tender counterpoint and explore different registers of the piano throughout the piece. Like most of its siblings, this waltz is a very short work, lasting only around a minute, and in binary form; the repeat of the first part appears as a variation, while the second part is repeated verbatim, with no return of the opening theme.Background
The 16 Waltzes Op. 39 were composed in 1865 and published in 1866 in three different versions – one for four hands, and two for piano solo, with one difficult and one simplified version.
