About Ludwig van Beethoven's Sonatinas
These works are youthful efforts from the composer’s time in Bonn. The sonatinas nos 1-3 (WoO 47), written when Beethoven was 12, were originally called Sonatas (“Kurfürstensonaten”).
Usually they are not published together with the more mature works, but the ABRSM complete edition of Beethoven Sonatas (Barry Cooper, 2008) includes them, making the total number of Beethoven sonatas 35. The Sonatina in C WoO 51 is an incomplete work, discovered among Beethoven's papers following his death. It is believed to have been composed some time around 1790. The two Sonatinas listed as Anhang 5 have been attributed to Beethoven, but their authenticity is now called into question. Nevertheless, the lyrical G major Sonatina remains a very popular work, frequently studied and performed.
