Nobuo Uematsu
on: February 06, 2006, 09:19:35 AM
Hey

What do you forumers think of Nobuo's Compositions ? He is one of my favourite composers.

I was thinking, Just say Someone became famous, maybe not overly famous like Lang Lang or Yundi Li but well known. They were classically trained. They had a program say something like some Bach, Chopin, Mozart and maybe some later composers that are alive today, Would it be odd if they had on the program Nobuo Uematsu ? Maybe Melodies of life, Zanarkand etc. If its video game music, is it forbidden in classical or those types of concerts (serious ones). Well playing for friends, family, elderly etc. they dont care, But for people you may not know, can you throw some of that stuff in too, you probably wont list on the program its from a video game but just say Nobuo Uematsu. Because the way I see it he is a composer, just like the rest and a good one too.
The way I see it is, Nobuo Uematsu is fine but the composer of mario brothers you probably could do, its not as serious as Nobuo's compositions

I just wanted to see what others thought, how would you feel if you went to see lang lang or someone maybe less well known, and it had Nobuo Uematsu on the program ? lol. Vg Music what ????????????

Nobuo Uematsu is my favorite composer!

I have the whole Final Fantasy Piano Collection of him and I think those pieces are often just amazing. A lot of people might underestimate those pieces composed by Nobuo, cause it's "game music", but some of those pieces are really difficult, for example: piano collection's Eternity, Fighting, Decisive Battle, Eternal Harvest, One Winged Angel, are cool pieces and not easy at all!

It would be awesome to see/hear someone as Lang Lang playing Nobuo's stuff, but I don't think a lot of people, who're really "into" classical music, would like to see Lang Lang playing that stuff. Maybe cause it's less serious or something, or just still the fact that it's game music, I don't know.

Anyway, Nobuo composes amazing music and I it's the reason why I started to play the piano..... Thanks Nobuo, for all those great pieces!  ;)

I completely agree. I think that not playing his pieces simply becuase they are used in games such as Final Fantasy do not make him less of a composer or his music less valuable. Not playing it for that reason is more of an insult to Nobuo. People play classical music in shows and other forms of media (Bach was played in Neon Genesis Evangelion but his music is just as good) but it should not determine whether the music is appropriate or not.  :)

Can you tell me where you found that music? I have checked many sites but a lot of the versions are not the same ones that are played in the game. It would be much appreciated. Thanks.  :)

I don't think there should be a problem playing Nobuo's pieces, just aslong as it doesn't throw off the rest of the concert. Koji Kondo's (sp?) Mario music would probably cause some problems just because the tunes are quite simple and not very complex, unless you were to 'class them up' and improvise classicaly around the themes and melodies. However, Hamelin played Schchedrin's Humoresque in a concert once, and it quite amused the audience, so maybe a little fun music wouldn't do much harm.

I would also like to see Nobuo's sheet music to the Final Fantasy series. I have never played them, but I have seem my friends play them on the Playstation and the music sounds very interesting.

@ryan2189: I found the whole Piano Collection serie on torrentsites. I uploaded all of them once on an other forum, if you're interested I can PM you with the links.

@henrah: check out the Piano Collection music. The original sountrack has nice tunes too, but the piano collection editions are especially made for the piano (obious), and are often a bit more difficult. Check out some pieces I mentioned in my earlier post: piano collection's Eternity, Fighting, Decisive Battle, Eternal Harvest, One Winged Angel. Fighting, Decisive Battle aren't the most beautiful pieces imo, but they're still worth checking and they're quite challenging.

Cheers Shroom, didn't see the piano collections, I was beginning to lose interest in the simplicity :D They look like much fun. Now which FF are Eternity and One Winged Angel from?

I have heard the Ending Theme (mp3 - direct link) performed by the Video Game Pianist and it sounds really nice. His interpretation is wonderful, but unfortunately my printer is messed up right now so I'll have to wait for my brother to return from work to print it off and start learning.

Hey, Uematsu is good stuff! I remember enjoying the music to the games long before having a real interest in music. It's nice that there are games out there that try to be more than just flash-in-the-pan entertainment. Though, I prefer the orchestrated versions to the piano reductions... One-Winged Angel and Kefka, intense!

I think rather than any prejudice against game music, that Nobuo Uematsu just isn't known of by classical pianists. Most established pianists weren't of the generation that grew up with these games.

I have been to many a concert where the pianist has played a quite unknown composer, surely one that other pianists wouldn't know of - unless of course they are friends of the pianist. So I do not think that should be a problem. And it would be good to educate some of the narrow-minded classical music lovers out there.

Jamie, I really think you should play some of Uematsu's compositions, but give some insight or information into him and the music before you play it. In fact, doing that with all of your pieces is a great idea - my dad does it with everything he plays, and it's extremely interesting to hear about the piece and the composer, it really makes it all the better when listening to it. Just don't give away anything before the concert i.e. on recital posters because that might put off some people, and it would be best to let them listen to it without judgement.

I play an arrangement of one of his pieces.

It's from Final Fantasy IV and is called "The Dreadful Fight"

If I were a performer, I would stubbornly programme his music and others until the audience submit to the fact that good music should be listened to, irrespective of style. :)
