Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov

One of the Five, the leading group of 19th century Russian nationalist composers, Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) embarked at first on a career as a naval officer. He later resigned from service to devote himself entirely to music. Mainly known for his symphonic works, Rimsky-Korsakov´s oeuvre also includes operas, chamber works, piano music and songs. Rimsky-Korsakov was a brilliant orchestrator and generously spent some of his time completing and revising works by fellow-composers, such as Borodin´s opera Prince Igor and some of Mussorgsky´s music. He was a very popular teacher at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, now named after him. The chief influences on Rimsky-Korsakov´s orchestral music were Balakirev, the leader of the Five, and Liszt. While his songs belong to the standard repertory of Russian singers, Rimsky-Korsakov´s solo piano and chamber music has not entered the canon. Worth noting, apart from the Piano Concerto Op. 30, are the composer´s own piano-duo arrangements of his most well-known orchestral works Sheherazade and Capriccio Espagnol, and of course the famous Flight of the Bumblebee (from the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan), transcribed by Rachmaninoff.
